The Beginning of Community Economy
Nothing spectacular happens in our work. No fireworks. No new records to share. Perhaps that is exactly why it matters. Systems change never feels dramatic but very messy. Increasingly, we think it actually feels remarkably ordinary.
When What Matters began in 2023, it was little more than an inquiry to understand better, how we can turn our idea of reclaiming humanity in the economy in tangible action. But each good idea has to meet reality to reveal its limit. So the inquiry left the screen. After community visits in Kenya and South Africa, we started co-creating with township communities in South Africa.
Bloemfontein. August 2025. Namibia Township. We invited the community to share what matters for a good life. 53 people gathered, aged 15 to 68. Three hours later, we learned through their perspective why community and economic development programs have failed, and what actual gaps they see. That day was not about poverty. New business ideas were born. And it was also the beginning of our first Community Economy Hub.
Seven months later, Feb '26, we established our first Hub in Namibia Township. We operate 2x a week. 10 to 15 township people drop by every office day. They seek advice. But mostly, they want to talk practical economics. Which development program would have considered this?
Next step: moving the first wave of township businesses toward a community economy. But that is for another story😊🤩
